Thank you for volunteering to be a Room Parent at Marshall Road Elementary School!
Room Parents promote the link between school and home that has helped make the Marshall Road community so strong. Room Parents help communicate filling the teacher’s volunteer and other needs to the families. The effort can range from coordinating classroom volunteers, organizing class celebrations, help arranging Field Trips, and planning classroom gifts. Room Parents also serve to communicate classroom and PTA information to the families and back to the teacher.
Classroom Communications: The PTA will be sending each room parent a class list to be verified for the directory at the end of October. You may want to get this information verified by each family by distributing copies in the Tuesday folder and via email. If you wish to get a class list going sooner you can work with your teacher’s open house and back to school night information.
Classroom Volunteers: Please check with your teacher to determine what activities volunteers are needed for. Some teachers need help with stuffing the Tuesday folders, help with reading groups, photocopying, and cutting items out. You can assist the teacher by finding volunteers for these tasks and helping to coordinate their schedules.
Classroom Celebrations: Work with your teacher to determine dates and times for classroom celebrations. Include that information in an email to parents (or letter if necessary). Typically, parents volunteer to contribute food, paper goods, decorations and time to classroom special events. Please check with parents if there are any food restrictions in your classroom.
Field Trips: The grade level teaching teams will identify a field trip destination and travel together. Scheduling these field trips can be quite time consuming for the teachers and the places (Smithsonian, Claude Moore Farm, National Zoo, etc.) tend to want to call to confirm dates during class time. The room parents by grade level team will help the teachers schedule the trips.
Teacher Appreciation: The PTA organizes a teacher appreciation week and often has school wide themed opportunities to show our support for teachers. The room parents take the lead by classroom and help keep families informed on how to contribute to this effort. Contributions in the past have included art work by the children, flowers from gardens, food for the teachers, etc.
