Partners in Print is a parent involvement program for beginning readers published by Creative Teaching press. It allows parents to learn effective reading strategies to help their children become better readers.
Each session provides hands on learning stations where an adult models a strategy followed by time for children and parents to read and practice the strategy together. A home activity sheet is provided with step by step directions so the strategy and vocabulary transfer to any book easily. Children learn how to read at school and at home helping to develop life long readers. Parents who read with their children provide positive influences toward reading. Partners in Print provide a simple structure for a relaxing evening of supported reading for beginning readers in grades K, 1 and 2.
This is a program used throughout Fairfax County and the US. Pat Hartman pahartman@fcps.edu, reading specialist at Marshall Road and her team customize the “lessons” to include poetry and other writing activities. PARTNERS IN PRINT sessions are held about once a month in the evenings. Both parents and students should attend.
