Every Fall and Spring the PTA coordinates with the school community and vendors to offer an array of Enrichment Programs which are held at the school.  The programs are available only in the mornings, before school. Here are some of the offerings already planned:

Fitness Warriors is a program that can help your child achieve better health, increase focus in the classroom, and have fun with their friends! During Fitness Warriors your Roadrunners become physically fit and enjoy structured fitness activities. They continue their journey of building Strong Minds, Strong Bodies and Strong Characters.

The Running with the Stars program involves students throughout Loudoun and Fairfax Counties. Participants train before school two times a week with a coach, typically a parent or teacher, to prepare for a 5K run/jog. This is a non-competitive activity where we encourage the kids to strive for their own personal best. Our goal is to promote overall health and an interest in exercise. Ultimately, the kids will have a great time being active with their friends and build confidence along the way. REGISTRATION IS OPEN NOW AND THE FIRST SESSION STARTS ON MONDAY, MARCH 5TH.  CLICK HERE TO REGISTER!

Spanish: Level 1: This class will provide an Introduction to Spanish language and culture. The instructor will use a variety of fun activities such as songs,  word search, coloring, writing words, and crafts to teach the children Spanish. The program is primarily oral. The basic goal is simple communication related to the child’s experience and exposure to the Spanish language and culture.

Jr. RoboticsOpen to student K-3.  Students work with a partner and perform a variety of building and programming exercises that aid their understanding of science and programming concepts.  Each week, class begins with a group discussion of the critical components of the robot or mechanical model.  Instructors from STEAMium Education will show students an on-screen animated video that brings the robot to life and shows them exactly what the finished robot can do.

Comic Book Illustration: Students will learn about character development, storyboarding, panelling, story design, color theory and how to hone their art style. Instructors from STEM exCEL will teach students how to create comics using tradition art along with digital software, so they may work comfortably in whichever medium they prefer. By the end of the course, each student will leave with their very own comic book they created in class, along with a strong introduction to digital art processes and comic composition concepts.

Chess Club: meets every other week on Tuesday in Art Room #1 and is under the supervision of MRES staff. Students are partnered with other students to learn and practice this ancient board game.

Green Team: The goal of the Green Team is to spread awareness and discuss how to make our school a greener place while learning and having fun. The Green Team leads some exciting projects such as monitoring the amount of trash and recycle coming from various classrooms, collecting  food items for a local food bank, and working in the school garden.

Introduction to Game Design The course teaches students important factors they need to consider when creating a game, such as game mechanics, player experience, art, story and how to work within your scope. Via discussions, activities and computer work lead by STEM exCEL instructors, students will learn how to make games from beginning to end. At the end of the session, students will leave with their own account information, so they may continue developing games at home and sharing them with friends and family.

Jr. Chem Lab STEAMium Education introduces K-3 students to an array of different scientific principles through interactive, hands-on science experiments. Students will be taught the scientific method and ask questions, construct hypothesis, test and gather evidence, analyze data and draw conclusions. Students will conduct experiments using safe, household supplies.

Coed Hip Hop: Come learn all of the elements and genres of Hip Hop technique, floor work, tricks and choreography from Velocity Dance instructors.  Students are encouraged to wear flat-bottom sneakers for class.

Electronics with Minecraft Redstone Explore electronics in a virtual world with essentially infinite resources. Using Minecraft’s Redstone blocks, which act as wires on a breadboard, students can build constructs representing electrical circuits and simple computer projects that are built in the real world. This course, with instructors from STEM exCEL, allows students to gain an understanding of how computers are processing commands, and take home their Redstone creations at the ends of the course.

KidzKeys: Offered in conjunction with FineArtsMatters, uses color and tons of FUN to introduce students in K-3rd grade to the joy of playing the piano. Using the colorful Chroma-Notes™ system and Kodaly rhythm syllables, students quickly learn to read musical notation while they play familiar songs they will love to practice in class and at home. Each session ends with a Class Recital for family and friends that will leave everyone smiling!

Pix and Stix: Marshall Road is excited to offer a guitar and drum club again this year for 5th and 6th graders of any skill level. This activity began in the Fall and continues through the entire school year. Registration closed in the Fall.
