Artist in Residence Program

The Mosaic is up and on view!

We celebrated with an unveiling ceremony for the 6th graders on Monday, February 27.   A second panel that will include the remaining buttons will be installed in the lobby this spring.

About the Program

Marshall Road brought in local mosaic artist, Bonnie Fitzgerald, as the school’s first Artist in Residence. Bonnie worked with our art teachers, Ginny Kinsey and Ron Woodard, and the sixth grade students to create a permanent work of art for our school’s lobby in celebration of the 50th Anniversary. The whole school community was involved in this project with the sixth graders and faculty who created tiles and the rest of the student body who created clay buttons.  All of the pieces together created a mosaic representing our school community.

Our Artist: Bonnie Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald has been designing and creating one of a kind architectural mosaics and public art works for over 20 years.  Works include mosaics surface enhancements and 3-dimensional artwork for municipal, residential, commercial and educational spaces.

Fitzgerald’s works are contemporary designs full of movement and energy. Using modern materials and cutting edge technical approaches her works are graceful and sophisticated while at the same time constructed to withstand the weather or whatever environment they are in.

Working in collaboration with designers and private collectors her portfolio also includes functional pieces such table tops and backsplashes. Her fine art works have been exhibited widely and licensed for inclusion in several publications.

Fitzgerald is also the founder of Maverick Mosaics Art School and Studio, an educational facility dedicated to nurturing expression through the art of mosaics. She has worked on several community mosaic and sculpture projects as Artist in Residence.

Fitzgerald’s works have been juried into editions of The Artful Home and The Guild Sourcebooks of Architectural and Residential Art. Her work and instruction have appeared on several episodes of Home and Garden Television’s (HGTV) “Curb Appeal” and on WTTG Fox News. In addition she and her company have been profiled in The Washington Post, Southern Living Magazine, Viva Tyson’s, Élan Magazine and several mosaic specific publications including The Groutline, Profitable Glass Quarterly and Mosaic Art Now magazines.

As a graduate of New College in Sarasota, Florida, her focus of study in college was monumental sculpture. In 2006 she earned Master in Mosaico certification at Orsoni Smalti Veneziani in Venice, Italy and has taken continuing education courses and workshops at UCLA, USC, The Corcoran School of Art, Smithsonian Institution and private instruction with world-renowned artists.
