We are in need of volunteers for this event!  Volunteers are needed to: 

• Run an activity station
• Help their child’s class during activities and help the teacher by organizing children and helping during the games 
• Eat lunch with a class and chaperone while the teacher takes his or her lunch break (you may help with this and your child’s class during games!) 

All volunteers will be rewarded with a barbeque lunch provided by the Marshall Road Administration! 

 WE ARE ALSO IN NEED OF 1-2 PARENTS TO MAN THE GRILL! MARSHALL ROAD HAS ONE GRILL BUT COULD USE ANOTHER GRILL IF ANYONE CAN LEND THEIR’S OUT FOR THE DAY. PLEASE CONTACT SHANE CLANCY OR KRISTEN LUCK.

Please make sure your child wears tennis shoes and their Marshall Road Track shirt or Spirit Wear.  There will be a lot of running and exercise during Field Day.  Children are encouraged to bring sunscreen and water bottles.  If you have any questions contact us at 703-937-1500.

We are still collecting broken crayons and “gently” used school supplies through early June. Marshall Road walkers and bikers are needed for next week’s Vienna Walk/Bike Challenge.  We are in the final push for the Nike ReUse-A-Shoe collection (so send in those shoes!) and we are in great need of used bicycles to donate to Wheels to Africa!!  Bikes that need minor repair will be accepted as well.

FCPS recently announced the bell schedule for next year (2012 – 2013) and MRES is slated to have the latest bell schedule (9:15 a.m. – 3:55 p.m.).  Many MRES parents have expressed concern over the hardships these hours will cause our school community and have asked what they can do to effect a change to these late hours.

Our voices need to be heard immediately if we wish to effect change.   What can you do?  1)  Sign the on-line petition (MRES Bell Schedule petition), and 2) write to Mr. Dean Tistadt, Chief Operating  Officer, Department of Facilities and Transportation Services (dean.tistadt@fcps.edu), and our school board members Ms. Patty Reed (patty.reed@fcps.edu)  and Ms. Pat Hynes (Pat.Hynes@fcps.edu) expressing your concerns.

Reasons that distinguish MRES’ request for earlier hours from other elementary schools are explained in the petition (link above) and are briefly noted here:
1.  Buses departing at 4:00 p.m. will be delayed in rush hour traffic and bused students will be on the buses longer, arriving home even later.  Significantly, the students with special needs who are bused outside the Vienna limits may be on the buses in excess of one hour.
2.  Location of MRES.  Unlike other schools, we are in the hub of major commuting arteries – Metro traffic, Interstate 66, Routes 50 and 29.   The rush hour congestion is worsened by the school’s vehicular traffic.
3.  Majority of our MRES community is dual income families and the late bell schedule makes it difficult for both parents to work traditional hours.
4.  MRES’ overburdened SACC program is not a viable option for parents as the next year’s morning wait list is expected to be over 60 students.
5.  The above problems will only be compounded next year when the families in the MetroWest development join our school community (more buses, vehicular traffic, SACC waitlist).

Time is of the essence – so make sure your voice is heard now!   We do not know if this effort will effect a change to the schedule, but we do know that without your voice, it will stand as is.  As a community, we can request our community’s concerns be heard, and that our children be considered in this issue.
