The Marshall Road PTA is being honored by the Mayor and the Town of Vienna regarding a nomination for “Outstanding Volunteerism”. All PTA chairs and members are invited to the reception on Tuesday, April 10th at 7:00pm in the Flame Room at the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department. Please join us in accepting this honor as it is all of our efforts that have made this year – and every year – so successful! If you are able to attend, please let Beth Eachus (president@marshallroadpta.org) know so that she may inform the Mayor’s office.
Our Marshall Road community has been invited to the 4th Annual Vienna Green Expo on Thursday, April 19th from 6:30 until 9:00PM at the Vienna Community Center.
The Community Enhancement Commission and the Town of Vienna will have exhibits for kids and their parents. There will be ”passports” for each child to take to exhibits of interest and after learning about the exhibitor’s service or product, the child will receive a sticker. Once the “passport” has 9 stickers it can be placed in a container for a later drawing for a prize. Please join our town in learning how to be more “Green”!

Mark your calendars NOW for May 5 – 10am – 11 am for a 1 mile walk at George Mason University (DC Metro Walk) to help support the Adult Congenital Heart Association & the Children’s Heart Foundation. The Marshall Road Community will be supporting TEAM PAUK for a 50 for 50 project. Team Pauk represents a young man from our communtiy who was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, single ventricle as a child. Although he has had many challenging years and surgeries, recently he was able to reviece a new ventricle and has renewed energy. Our goal is to have at least 50 participants including staff, parents and students! Any donation amount is welcome. We need your HELP to make this happen. Please register at the link below even if you are just walking.
http://www.congenitalheartwalk.org/ Click DC Metro Walk Register. Then click TEAM PAUK on right – JOIN TEAM
* All participants please register online regardless of donation amount and write MRES after your name so we can keep track of participants! Questions: email Kristen Luck at kjluck@fcps.edu.
Facts: Nearly 2 million children and adults are living with a congenital heart defect (CHD) in the United States. Each year approximately 40, 000 babies are born with CH, making it the country’s nubmer #1 birth defect. At least 10% of all congenital heart defects are first found in adulthood. Thanks to increases in survival rates, the number of adults living with a CHD rises by 5% a year and adults with CHD’s are living longer, fuller lives than ever before. Your support will continue our progress.
The Congenital Heart Walk is an exciting joint effort between the Adult Congenital Heart Association (ACHA) and the Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF). This effort will raise funds to help both organizations continue their missions to address the needs of both the newly diagnosed and long-term survivors of congenital heart defects, in a truly inspirational day of sharing, caring and fun.
Thank you to all who supported the 50th Anniversary Gala! Close to 150 members of our Marshall Road community – both past and present – attended the Gala at Westwood Country Club including teachers, parents, alumni and staff.
A beautiful and delicious cake in our school colors of black, white and red was created by Marshall Road parent Martha Ponce. Festive music selected and played by Marshall Road parent and DJ Kevin McCarthy. Throughout the evening, a fabulous collection of photos from Marshall Road’s 50 years, that had been created by teacher Ginny Kinsey, was shared with the generous support of Kevin McDonnell from Fairfax County Public Schools Information and Multimedia Services. Splendid Photography donated the services of their superb photographer Lauren Brownlee to capture the evening in photos many of which are posted on the Gala page. http://marshallroadpta.org/programs/marshall-road-50th-anniversary-gala/

Every child who turned in a reading log has earned a $5 gift certificate to the upcoming book fair. Our 50th Anniversary Mosaic Mural has been unveiled and is on display in the school lobby. Marshall Road had brought in local mosaic artist, Bonnie Fitzgerald, as the school’s first Artist in Residence. Bonnie worked with the entire school community to create a permanent work of art for our school’s lobby in celebration of the 50th Anniversary. Thank you to Rita Monner and Dena Carter for chairing this wonderful effort!
The “unveiling” was featured in the Vienna Patch. http://vienna.patch.com/articles/photos-marshall-road-mosaic-celebrates-community#photo-9204342
As part of our Food for Thought program, we are asking for donations of POPCORN from Monday, February 27th through Thursday, March 1st. A collection bin will be located in the school lobby. Please contribute if you can. Donations will go to the food pantry at Our Daily Bread which supports the entire Vienna community including our Food for Thought program.

Do you have old eyeglasses or sunglasses at home? Fairfax Education Association is partnering with the Lions Clubs of Northern Virginia to collect used eyeglasses, recycle the glasses and then donate them to eye care clinics in Fairfax County and across the world. The goal is to increase the vision of those worldwide and help students become better readers through better sight.
Marshall Road ES has identified this effort as one of our 50 for 50 projects so we have set a goal to collect 50 or more pairs of glasses. There will be a collection box in the school lobby next week and at Dr. Seuss night on Thursday, March 1st.
Our volunteers from Marshall Road did such a fabulous job at our Fall Clean Up day that the Town of Vienna Parks and Recreation have asked for our help again!
