The Town of Vienna, with funding from a VDOT grant, is undertaking a sidewalk construction project that will greatly benefit pedestrians and cyclists that travel to and from Marshall Road Elementary School. The existing asphalt path along the south side of Marshall Road SW, from MRES to Trowbridge Place, will be replaced with a concrete sidewalk. The road elevation will be adjusted from Rachel Lane to Trowbridge Place, and new curb, gutter and sidewalk will be installed on the south side of the road. Additionally, new curb ramps will be installed throughout the Marshall Road SW corridor, and new traffic control devices (i.e., signage, pavement markings, etc.) will be installed in order to improve pedestrian awareness and provide traffic-calming measures.
This construction project will begin on Monday, March 26, 2018 at the start of the MRES spring break. Work is anticipated to be done by June 23, 2018. For several weeks, both lanes of Marshall Road SW were closed to thru traffic from Pickett Place to Rachel Lane. As of April 17, 2018, Marshall Road is now open to thru traffic. Construction on the project will continue through the end of June but the majority of the road, curb/gutter, and sidewalk work has been completed and is safe for vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
