The Town of Vienna, with funding from a VDOT grant, is undertaking a sidewalk construction project that will greatly benefit pedestrians and cyclists that travel to and from Marshall Road Elementary School. The existing asphalt path along the south side of Marshall Road SW, from MRES to Trowbridge Place, will be replaced with a concrete sidewalk. The road elevation will be adjusted from Rachel Lane to Trowbridge Place, and new curb, gutter and sidewalk will be installed on the south side of the road. Additionally, new curb ramps will be installed throughout the Marshall Road SW corridor, and new traffic control devices (i.e., signage, pavement markings, etc.) will be installed in order to improve pedestrian awareness and provide traffic-calming measures.
This construction project will begin on Monday, March 26, 2018 at the start of the MRES spring break. Work is anticipated to be done by June 23, 2018. During this time, both lanes of Marshall Road SW will be closed to thru traffic from Pickett Place to Rachel Lane. Residents will have access to their homes and emergency vehicles will come into the construction area, but all other vehicle traffic will have to follow the detour. From Nutley Street, turn onto Kingsley Road, right onto Ware Street, and left onto Marshall Road when desiring to drive eastbound. When traveling westbound on Marshall Road, turn right onto Ware Street, left onto Tapawingo Road SW, and then onto Nutley Street.
